CHAPTER TWELVE

Josh could not believe that Cassy had willingly gone with the Indians. She must be mad, he reasoned. It was the only answer. She had been so against the trip in the first place and hated the work and hardship it brought to her. She had barely lifted a finger to help Lily, or anyone else, for that matter. She spent her time in the wagon or playing her violin, reading her magazines, and books, but never participating in the things the rest of the people of the wagon train occupied themselves with. She was above them all, in her mind. A pampered hot house flower, among a field of weeds, and they could feel it, through her disdaining gaze, when ever she did look at them. She despised the wagon master, and resented Lily, even though Lily was helping her. So why…..why would she ever consent to follow a band of savage Indians, away like that?

It did not appear that they forced her. They did not tie her, or aim their weapons at her. He was amazed at the fact that the Indians buried the dead of the wagon train, and had a sneaking feeling that Cassy had made them do it, because they looked reluctant when they went about digging the holes to put the bodies in.

She sat in the wagon talking to the leader of the group, holding his child. He wondered why a band of Indians would be taking a baby with them, and wondered where the mother of the baby was? Had they killed her in order to steal the baby? But why would they want a baby they could not feed, and had to force someone else to feed? How could they know there would be someone to feed the baby, if they killed the mother? Maybe the mother had died in some other way, he reasoned, and they had not planed to take the infant without the mother. But there it was. His wife had given her dead baby to the Indians to bury, and now she was taking care of their baby, as though it was the normal thing to do.

When he and Lily woke in the morning and found the band of Indians, along with Cassy gone, he didn’t know whether to be relieved or angry? Perhaps he could have snuck to her wagon in the night and discovered what was going on, but if the Indians had caught him, they may have made him and Lily come with them as well. Was he a coward, or was he just practical, he wondered?

He truly loved Cassy. She was all he desired in a wife. He realized though, that he had loved her for all the wrong reasons. Her beauty, her culture, her family, her position in life and the fact she made a perfect hostess. But he now realized they had little in common. She had no sense of adventure. He could predict her every action and opinion. She always
